November, 2009 – HT’s David Madera welcomes us to the first permitted home construction in America utilizing hemp as a primary building material. Hemp shiv and a lime-based binder are mixed with water to make “hempcrete”, which is then poured between forms and tamped.
Feburary, 2010 – We return in frigid conditions to view the completed hemp walls awaiting rendering – despite harsh winter weather and rime icing at the 3,200′ elevation, the exposed hempcrete walls were in fine condition.
